I bought Dragon Age Inquisition on sale but haven't played it yet. Due to a list of games to play and mixed reviews of Inquisition I've read, it wouldn't surprise me if I only played once, rather than the several playthroughs I did of Origins, Mass Effect, and Mass Effect 2.
For those who have played, particularly those who played multiple times, what should I do to maximize enjoyment of that one run?

I've played over 1,000 hours, so I know the game well. My tips would be: - Unless you really want to, you don't have to pick every Elfroot.
- The first main area - The Hinterlands - was not designed to be fully explored before moving on to other areas.
The game is best played moving on to other areas when you can (or when the game hands your ass to you). Follow some interesting leads in an area then move on. - Characters remain a strength, don't forget to talk to them.

Play as a mage. After getting to Skyhold, get the Knight Enchanter specialization. recruit everyone take Iron Bull and Sera on quests for some funny banter. In fact taking Sera with any other companion tends to lead to some funny and silly banter Iron Bull and Vivienne have some funny dialogue talk with everyone in between quests as much as possible to get the most dialogue from them as possible

Use Alix Wilton Regan (aka the British lady) for your PC's voice!

Use Alix Wilton Regan (aka the British lady) for your PC's voice! Yep. She did a wonderful job voicing femquisitor just like she did a wonderful job voicing Samantha Traynor in ME3. She is also my avatar

Don't try to finish the Hinterlands all at once, that's pretty much the best piece of advice I can give. It can be a big problem early game.

I preffer Rift Mage to Knight Enchanter, but both are good.

Get out of the Hinterlands before Solas begins yelling at you to leave it

For the Hinterlands at the beginning, clear out the apostate mages and templars at their strongholds. Plus setup at least two camps (i.e. Redcliffe farms and Dwarfson's Pass) so you can fast travel and complete quests later.
Iron Bull, Dorian and Sera have great banter together if they're your party members.
As for choosing a class, I like playing a dual dagger rogue. Assassin deals a lot of damage, but Artificer is crazy fun with all the bombs and traps you can throw at enemies.

Like others have said don't spend too long in the Hinterlands, there's a lot of cool areas in the game and you can always come back to the Hinterlands whenever you want to. For me personally when it comes to classes I've always liked mages and I had a great time playing as a dual dagger rogue and archer. A lot of the classes and specializations are pretty fun, that's part of the reason why I did a couple of playthroughs just so I could try out all of the different options.

As others have said, exit the Hinterlands once you get enough power points.
I've stayed in the Hinterlands and did everything before moving forward with the story in one of my playthroughs. Don't recall what level I was at when I finally left.
I did everything possible, other regions besides Hinterlands, before getting to Skyhold and ended up near level 13

Follow the advice on the Hinterlands at least, otherwise I would suggest you play at your pace.
If you don't mind collecting things, go for it. If you would rather do random one-off quests, follow that instead. Rather just kill enemies and solve the main side-quests in each area, or set up base camps?
One of the smartest moves you can do for the game is to play it how you would enjoy it. Don't do content you don't want to do, and you will find a lot more enjoyment in the game than you may think.

Lavellans and Trevelyans seem to have a bit more investment in the story (so I've heard). A female Dalish will offer the most opportunities if you save selectively to see certain romance outcomes. Get to Val Royeaux as quickly as your level permits so you can grab as many teammates as possible before doing too many missions in the Hinterlands. Laying down tents and rifts should get you enough power. Teammate approval can be farmed with Hinterland missions (Consulting the wiki can help). Switch up teammates accordingly and max approval to get all the scenes (unless you're devoted to roleplaying a personality). Get all the knowledge perks if you are looking to see all dialogue options. Hope this helps. Short of consulting the wiki constantly, I can't think of anything else if you're really voracious for content.

I feel like the most important advice anyone can give you is the one about not trying to do the whole hinterlands map all at once (I've done it, don't do it). Seriously, don't even think about it. I'm currently trying to start my 6th (or 7th?) playthrough and I think the hinterlands-sickness got me.. I just can't get past it anymore.. maybe in two weeks (after my more or less well earned holiday).
