All three Mass Effect games introduced the player to an action based opening sequence. Purposely designed as a tutorial. imo. I liked ME2 better than the other two because it gave the new player a bit of background.
Speculation Andromeda will open up with a cinematic showing the crew entering the stasis pods followed by the ARKs departing from man's home world, just before the Reapers invade Earth. This is followed by another cut scene showing the Reapers arriving. Bio might show the amount of time the journey took to get to Andromeda followed by that famous wake up scene. This or something similar plus a voice over explaining what's going on is the intro to the game.
So, next is how the game introduces the player to the game mechanics... we wake up in the ARK. Will the game follow Half-Life, where we stumble to learn the game or like Halo 1 with the Master Chief? Does the ARK arrive in trouble and the controlling AI needs Ryder's help to get things under control? Will the GUI provide hints on what to do? Is there an internal mutiny and Ryder must squash it which introduces us to weapons? Is there a Virtual Intelligence controlling the ARK and helps out Ryder in the intial stages?
Thoughts?

What? What do you consider the "opening sequence?" Mass Effect 1 starts with walking around the ship and talking to people. The first thing that happens is jumping through the Relay, helping to establish the setting. Then Eden Prime was a full mission.
Now, the next two games did have dramatic action after a few cutscenes, making them very different from ME1. And all that drama was wasted by what followed next.
Considering the setting and likely the technology are changing completely, I really hope they go the Mass Effect 1 route.

My guess is that it will start around the time right after Thessia when Cerberus runs off with the information from the Temple of Athame. There will be a call of some sorts from Shepard to Admiral Hackett saying they failed, which will switch to a cut scene showing people walking towards stasis pods and possibly saying goodbye to the ones that are being left behind. As everyone gets in the pods and is waiting to be put into stasis there will probably some speech from Hackett or a member of the Council talking about how the people on this ship are the last hope of the galaxy. Something like Eisenhower's speech before D-Day only switched around to make it applicable for Mass Effect youtu.be/rjlXH2I2Mes?t=50sMix in a lot of sad music and done right it could be one of the most emotional openings to a game ever. Arrival in the new galaxy will probably have the Ark ship being swarmed with military vessels that detect a ship of unknown origin. I'm guessing a machine race like the Geth so they can handwave translation problems that would come from species of different galaxies trying to interact for the first time. I assume there will be a misunderstanding of course that will introduce us to how combat will function with our character ultimately being subdued by whatever alien force is investigating the ship and being brought before a general or leader of some kind for interrogation. First hour of the game could be really awesome if its done right.

Shouldn't this thread be moved to the ME Andromeda section? Anyways. I'll copy/paste what I post on bsn At the beginning, the camera looks out at the city of Vancouver. The sound of a door is heard opening followed by a familiar voice being heard. At that point, the character creator pops to adjust the looks of Shepard. Just like Hawke in DAI. Anderson introduces the Chief Director for the building of the ships that will make the trip to Andromeda. Only a vague explanation is given to Shepard about the project. The director wants Shepard to give a message to the folks making the journey. He gives Shepard a datapad to read. A few moments later, and after Anderson and the director have left, Shepard walks towards the window and looks towards the sky. The scene switches to showing shuttles leaving Earth heading to the ships. People are seen doing all kinds of task to prepare the ships for the journey. A couple of characters are seen talking. One of them mentions Ryder's name. At that point, another character creator pops up to create the looks of Ryder. After that, Ryder is seen with family members then told to head to her/his stasis pod for the trip. After giving hugs to family members, Ryder is seen getting in his/her pod. For added touch Since the song Ghost Riders in the Sky will be in the game, what about a song for the ships leaving the Milky Way? Since humanity will lead the other ships to Andromeda, the pilot of the human led ship will get on the CB and say Breaker one-nine. We got ourselves a CONVOY. Key in the song. excellent.

I can see the game starting with reason for leaving, whatever it is, followed by snippets of the actual journey. Once first contact is about to be established, our Ryder will need to be woken up then we'll get the "We're here" scene followed by our sibling telling us to get our ass in gear, which we do. And then, we arrive at the command center for the Ark we're on to get our mission briefing.

I imagine there will be an introductory text description (as is tradition) followed by scenes of Ark launch followed by the title screen. The first in-game sequence will be surely be Ryder waking up from the cryo-pod and a tutorial will follow introducing us to the new dialogue system, our new squad-mates and crew finally leading us up to the bridge to check out the first view of Andromeda paying subtle homage to ME1. I wouldn't be surprise if there is some repurposing of the original score to accompany the visuals.

Just starting another play through of ME2 and I encountered a line that's got me speculating a bit since we've seen 3 ARKs in the trailer... beginning of ME2, Joker - "Three ships went missing here in the last month. Something happened to 'em."
So, I think we might get a written explanation as to how vanishing ships and vanishing colonies had been happening throughout the Milky Way. Some were eventually explained as attacks by the collectors but others remained a mystery. After that, we'll see clips of the journey to Andromeda and eventually Ryder waking up. Perhaps Ryder's ARK will be under attack somehow (similar to the beginning of ME2) and getting that attack under control will serve as the tutorial level.

I just hope it's better than DAI. New players to the franchise must have been really confused. Hell, I knew what was going on and was a bit confused when greeted to an explosion when clicking new game.
Maybe a narrated montage of cutscenes on the Ark project development and mission execution...the E3 trailer seemingly touched on it a bit. A good tutorial might be something like being woken up halfway to Andromeda in order to correct a catastrophic malfunction...maybe fight a few VI's that have gone bonkers. Then back to sleep until the "we made it" blurb.
I really hope it isn't a paragraph of text and bam, awoken in Andromeda. That would be a really weak way to start a game.

The game needs to grab you from the start. Remember, EA want to target the casuals.... An in you face action sequence may be the way to do it.

We know we have the departure scene from Behind the Scenes video. The "we made it" suggests some potential danger during the journey. Well, after 600 yrs, equipment failure can occur. Perhaps after the wake scene, something does go bonkers.

Blech, then give them their "no story, just shoot stuff" mode, like in ME3. What I really hope is that it doesn't have the slow, boring, tutorial opening levels that the modern military shooters all have now. An opening sequence like ME2 is fine. It was dramatic and full of impact. They just need to not waste it, like having the death and resurrection of the main character mean absolutely nothing.

The feeling i get from the youthfulness of the characters is that, when we get our mission briefing on the Ark, it'll be with our CO, along with the rest of our group. I imagine Ryder'll be in charge of a task force which has run of where they need to go and what needs to be done but they still report to the CO with the mission briefings.

I can almost guarantee you that the Jennifer Hale speech will be given in game at some point. My thought is maybe about halfway through the prologue, right before Ryder's ship is attacked before she wakes up and says, "We made it."
