Wanted to start this thread on a positive note. Now I know people have strong opinions about Ashley. Being a long time Ash supporter, I thought I'd post this here. It is a post that was written by Badpie, a Shepley fan fiction writer back in 2010 on the "Ashley Williams for Eternity" support group. In my opinion, it is a excellent concise view of why she liked her character as written by Chris L'Etoile in me1. ------------------------------- - She's vibrant. Totally full of life. She's fiery and energetic and her energy is infectious. - She's beautiful. Totally gorgeous. Elegant features like perfect cheekbones, full lips, big soulful brown eyes, killer eye lashes and let's face it, the cutest nose ever. - She's bad ass in a totally believable way. She's tough, but they didn't make her a cookie cutter "I'm so hot yet so tough yet so tender and all the things plucked from a best of" type of tough. She's tough because she's vulnerable. And strong because she has issues to overcome. She's also physically badass in a way I can believe. You're not gonna see Ash win a fist fight with a Krogan. But you will see her get in a good kick to his quads at the very least. - She's refreshingly flawed. And not flawed in the Miranda or Jack way. Nothing against either of those characters except that they are two sides of Ash just taken, split and amplified because it was too confusing for people to deal with a truly real character that could both ****** them off and make them love her. But I digress. She says offensive things, things that make anyone go "okay wait, hold on" She has opinions that are not shared by me or by my Shepard. She has a martyr complex, daddy issues, a big mouth that often says the wrong thing. My Shepard (and me) have been totally annoyed to **** by her at a couple points. But I love that about her. - She challenges Shepard. She's the only one to ever do this. The only one to ever play devil's advocate with him and speak her mind and stick with her convictions. In ME2, people could disagree with you, but all it took was a charm option to get them to say "maybe you're right." Ash sticks to her guns, and that threatens a lot of manly alpha!Sheps out there who don't like being sassed by no wimmen folk. - She's smart. A lot smarter than she lets on. Her persona comes off sometimes as a brassy marine grunt, something she's probably had to put on in order to make it in the boys' club, but she's incredibly intelligent. - She somehow manages to be an incredibly sexual being without being tarted up. In heavy armor, a military bun and no makeup Ash is able to wield her sexual nature expertly. She's comfortable in her own skin and confident. She's perfectly aware that she's gorgeous, but she only uses that asset on her own terms. Hooray for hellcats. ------------------------------ Remember this was before me3. This is her opinion. But it is shared by me and many of Ash's long time supporters. This is the Ash we fell in love with. This is the Ash that we defended so diligently. I understand the haters will hate. But as we said on the Ash support thread, we support Ash because "Ash is worth it!"

ME1 will always be amazing in making me feel that sense of camaraderie with Ashley. That moment she invited Shepard to honor Armistice day with a drink hit me hard with that sister in arms vibe. I don't quite get that sense with any other female character and I still die a little inside when ME3 left things between Shepard and Ashley distant, like that high school friend who you used to be so close with is now a stranger. Yeah, I get it, Horizon simply can't be forgotten (darn it Liara, you could have told her or Kaidan I was back!) Ashley! T_T

One of the reasons I like her is because she is a soldier like I was a long time ago

In my opinion she was the best character written in the entire trilogy. I love the fact that she has flaws and issues. Don't we all? It would have been interesting to see how Drew would have written her character in me3. But it wasn't to be.

I actually loved Ashley in ME1. Sadly she was a totally different person in ME3. I don't like her in that game.

I'm glad I get to head this off before anyone says something wrong:
Ashley is not "space racist." She's a patriot, putting the Alliance first. She says the Alliance can't depend on the other species as allies because of their governments, not because of their individuals. It's the same as how you might discuss your country's official dealings with other countries.

She definitely has a better thing going in ME1, which is why there's always nothing left of her but a smoking crater on Virmire in all my playthroughs. Posthumously earning the Salarian Dagger and Nova Cluster medals is a fitting end to her. ME3 indeed ruins her beyond salvation.

I actually did one playthrough where I let Ashley die, out of respect for the Kaidan fan base. The Virmire survivors were getting a lot of flack on the forums back then. It was one of the hardest things I ever did in gaming. I regretted it almost immediately. I did finished the playthrough though. I was surprised that Kaidan had the exact lines as Ash afterwards. His personality completely changed. Sloppy Bioware.

I had just signed up with this site intending to make and Ashley thread myself but this will do. One of the things i like about Ashley, besides the soldiering and the poetry, is how she talks about her family. She really cares for her sisters like an older sibling should. My Shepard the opposite upbringing as his family died on Mindoir but he still enjoys listening to Ashley's stories as it gives him hope. P.S. If i my make small suggestion, maybe we could update the first post with any Ashley related fan-fics people want to share. That's a good idea for the other character threads as well.
