I went into the game store looking for a game to play to keep me interested. The guy at the counter told me about ME2 being available for the ps3 since he knew I had one. It didn't catch my interest. He did say to download the demo. I tried the demo and couldn't get 2 minutes in before I stopped and said what a load of crap.
Went back to the store hoping to find a game to keep me interested. There wasn't anything, but the guy was sure I would like ME2. With nothing better to do, I tried the demo again. I did finish it, but still thought it was crap. Went back to the store again. The guy bought the game for me. I was surprise. It was cheap anyways. Fine. I thought I would regret playing.
Installed the game.
Got to the point where the character hugged some other character that I knew nothing about. I saved the game. Went to the store where the guy told me it was a character from the first game. Swell. So I ordered a copy to play on the pc. Whippy-do-da. It was cheap. Went back home to finish the playthrough.
The playthrough was crash and burn. The whole time I was paying more attention to the controls than what any of the characters were saying. I just pick this, that and the other thing.
After finishing the playthrough, I got a call saying ME1 arrived.
So that's how I was introduced to ME.

ME2 360 demo. Played it up till Jack mission and didn't even finish it, because the next day I bought the entire Trilogy and started with ME1. So yeah, just a small part of the ME2 demo had me sold and obsessed with a new series of games I've never played before.

The very first trailer actually. I pretty much bought an x360 largely on the strength of the pre-release footage of ME1 back in '07. The footage of the dialogue system & biotic gameplay, the setting, the aliens, the promise of planetary exploration - it was fascinating. Such a unique sci-fi premise with a unique aesthetic style which really stood out from the dreary grey-brown crowd at the time. Aside from ME:A itself there's still nothing remotely like the first ME today in mainstream gaming. It was everything i hoped it would be and more. And while the rest of the trilogy never lived up to it the journey has been for me the most remarkable series of the last generation. And now according to the first impressions of that neoGAF poster we have essentially a reimagining of the first game - if it fullfils even a tiny bit of that early promise there will be an entire new generation of gamers who will experience exactly what we did about 10 years ago and that's very exciting. Non of the footage released so far has backed this up at all but despite my battle-weary permanently tempered expectations for this series at this point, the prospect of potentially re-experiencing this series again for the very first time - There are no words.

I saw a review on a UK tv show... i can't even remember what it was, i had no idea who Bioware even was before this, and had only just bought a 360, i think it was like... my 4th game on a system i bought for Fable 2 (which i ended up not liking)
Just seeing what you could pick spoken dialog options really intrigued me at the time, being able to shape a story like that, felt brand new me, having grown up going from NES to PS1 to PS2 i had never played anything like it. First game is still my favorite of the series.

Just as I was retiring my PS2 and purchased a PS3 a few years back, a friend bought a copy of ME3 and I decided to give it a try. At the time, I spent little time gaming so was unfamiliar with anything beyond the SNES I used to play with as a kid and a couple of things I occasionally played on the PS2, so this was all very new to me. In any case, I only got a few minutes in when I realized that I was totally seeing the continuation of a bigger story and decided to buy ME1 and 2 first, and I was hooked ever since, and later bought the first 2 DA games after putting in a few playthroughs.

I heard about ME when it was first released, but couldn't play it because I didn't have a Xbox 360. Eventually, it was released for PC, but again, didn't have a computer that could handle it. I eventually watched playthroughs on YouTube.
At one point after the 360 had gotten cheap enough, I decided to buy one just to play ME myself. I made the mistake of tilting the 360 up during installation and it grinded the disc; leaving behind a lovely, circular scratch that made the game unusable. I decided to return the 360 and went on with my life.
Later on, I downloaded the first ME for PC finally. It was a hard lesson on why I hate playing on PC, and why minimum specs aren't enough to actually play a game. At first, I couldn't even get the damn game to run. I had to get help just to learn it would only play on an "administrator" account, yet the game failed to mention that. And once it did "play," it barely ran at all. Useless. Again, moved on with my life.
Then in 2013, I learned that over half a year before, ME1 had finally been released for PS3. I had refused to play ME2 or ME3 without playing ME1 first. So I bought the trilogy for $40 and finally got to play it. I'm a patient person.

The Mass Effect 3 ending controversy. It was the first time I ever heard the name "Bioware". After the whole trilogy was released on PS3, I got it on my birthday.

My first exposure to Mass Effect came around August 2006 when Electronic Gaming Monthly featured the game on its September issue. Was intrigued with the game and decided to buy it on Day One. Unlike my previous outing with KOTOR, I actually felt encouraged to try different choices and make different characters. Between Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2, those games clocked in triple-digit hours of playtime out of my entire gaming library since the 1990s.

I played previous Bioware games, and I knew Mass Effect had the Bioware name and so for that reason I was interested... the thing that ultimately sealed the deal were the gamespot user reviews which were super high, since they tended to be more picky =-).
So yeah I got the first one and that was that.
