With hindsight, I still enjoy DA2 for its story and characters, even as I despair of the recycled environments. What about you? Is it a disaster or was it a really good game rushed out of the door.

It was different and that is not a bad thing. I personally like a more personal story. And even if there are thing that I don't like about DA2 I still think it's a good game.

I made it to chapter 3 or 4, and I didn't have it in me to keep playing. Main story seems fine enough to keep going, but all the filler repetitive sidequests bored me enough to finally stop. So since I stopped at DA2, I don't see myself playing DAI and rest of this series. Maybe BioWare should reboot this series too. If they can pull off MEA reboot, that is.

Unpopular opinion: It's my favorite one.

Nowadays, I liken Dragon Age ][ to anther RPG with a polarized reception, Dark Souls II. Both are sequels to highly popular games, both are considered weaker games compared to their prequels, both were criticized for their lazy "just send waves of mooks at the player" design for difficulty, and both have ardent defenders of their quality from fans of these sequels. In my case, I consider Dark Souls II a far better game than Dragon Age ][ both because it wasn't rushed out the gate and because Dragon Age ][ did several things I wasn't a fan of in general like removing armor equipping for companions.
If I were to be fair to Dragon Age ][, I would say it's much more playable to me if I save edit the game to give me several more options than what the base game provides. On its own though, I wouldn't give it higher than a 6/10.

I think story wise the basic overall plot of DA:O is a basically a boilerplate fantasy movie now that is a knock on it but it feels like a movie in terms of it's story.
I think DA2 tries to be like a 5 season TV show with seasons 2 and 4 missing. What is sad is that really is a truly great story that doesn't use a 1/100,000,000th of the potential it sets up with it's own story. Like in act 2 when Varric asks Hawke what is she going to and the replies basically are: 1) Start a business. 2) Go into politics. 3) Protect your family.
You don't do any of these.
But lets think about what if you can: Take that serial killer who is a magistrate's son. Say you don't kill him and now you have a magistrate who owes you a big favor. Maybe he can help you get a lease on a shop and/or cut through red tape for you and helps get you get imported goods into the shop. But the elf who wanted his dead is still mad that you didn't kill him leads a boycott against Hawke's business and maybe he gets some friends of his to harass Merrill (if she becomes Hawke's lover) and once the store is open the elves refuse to work for and buy from you.
Now lets flip it and say that you did kill the magistrate's son and he vows to make Hawke's life miserable he makes getting the lease more expensive and throws more red tape at you and pretty much stops you from importing goods to the store. The elf whose daughter you helped now leads the elves to help Hawke by protesting the magistrate and helping Merrill (if she's Hawke's lover) and he helps you by connecting you with elves that can make you items to sell in the shop and will recommend that the elves support your store.
There are so many examples of that wasted potential that to me is so frustrating about DA2. Stuff like the recycled environments didn't really bother me because it's set in the same place for 10 years now ME1 really overuses recycled environments to a sickening degree. I enjoyed the combat more because the combat was fluid and fun, whereas DA:O combat could get boring after a while.
I would love to see BioWare remake DA2.

Easily a flawed masterpiece.
Technically it is limited and honestly, most of the complaints come in there. From a narrative perspective it is BioWare's most ambitious piece of work, and certainly their most unique piece of work out there. It stands out because its personal, it's about the every-man, blue collar hero and their moment of greatness in shaping the world.
If you really think about it, Hawke is not a superhero, he is not the inquisitor or the warden, or the Bhaalspawn or Shepard, he is the most normal out of the BioWare pantheon of chosen ones, and it was so refreshing, so interesting to play a character grounded in the reality of the common problems of the world instead of trying to save it from being destroyed...
It was worth the headaches of weak game design in my book.

I liked the characters, the protagonist and the story. Sure, going to basically the same places over and over again and things like orsinos "oh no, hawke sided with the mages, is coming to help us and is murdering every templer on his way, we will all die, let's use some blood magic in order to kill us" gave me a headache but I liked/ like the game overall.

I liked it for what it was. The characters were enjoyable, and the story kept me engaged through to the end. And that's what matters to me. Could it have been better? Certain;y, but I was happy with what I got.

It was a good game but not a great game. ACT 2 was the BEST. ACT 1 was too linear and Act 3 was only decent with the DLC.
I rate it a 7/10
I consider it an example of how a game should NOT be rushed.
I dont hate it. I had fun for what it had but I dont think it deserves the shrine some people put it on. Even the developers acknowledged it was not perfect.
I have no doubt they will point out the faults of DAI when the new game comes out.
But I've come to accept that each game will be different and I embraced all of them in different ways.

Imagine a remaster of Dragon Age 2 though in the Frostbite engine...
Large, seamless city scape with a day/night cycle built in...maybe make some quests timed so there is a sense of urgency...could work. Could also put in some combat fixes from Inquisition and remove the issues with respawning enemies, instead make finite mobs.

Good game. My favorite character is Meredith. The best part is playing as sarcastic Hawke

What made me sad was playing Legacy and MoTA. Seeing all the new environments and assets they made, the new places and themes (not so much MoTA, mostly Legacy) hints at what they could've achieved with DA2 given another year. It's so sad they never got to make the game it should've been. So much lost potential.
I still really like it though.

I will say the game had a lot of content for only being in development for about 17 months
